The Zion Narrows
Where the River Becomes the Trail
There are hikes that leave footprints. Then there are hikes that change your internal compass. The Narrows is the latter.
Deep within Zion National Park lies a place where the canyon walls soar a thousand feet overhead—and the only way forward is straight through the Virgin River. This isn’t just a hike—it’s a journey through time, water, and ancient stone.
The Bottom-Up Adventure
Start at the Temple of Sinawava. Step into wonder. The most popular way to experience the Narrows begins at the end of Zion Canyon’s scenic drive. After a leisurely stroll down the paved Riverside Walk, the trail abruptly disappears—and the river becomes your path.
Wade through cool, flowing water beneath sandstone cliffs that feel otherworldly. The canyon begins wide and calm, dotted with quiet alcoves and sunlit ledges. But keep going… because around 2.5 miles in, the walls close in. The light fades. The magic intensifies. This is Wall Street—the most iconic stretch of the Narrows.
You can turn back anytime. Most hikers aim for the junction with Orderville Canyon, then retrace their steps to solid ground. For bottom-up hikers, Big Spring—a quiet cascade tucked into the canyon wall—is your turnaround point.

Gear Up for Greatness
Wading through a cold, rocky river all day? That’s not something you wing.
At Zion Outfitter, we equip you with everything you need to stay dry, stable, and stoked—because nothing ruins a once-in-a-lifetime hike like soggy boots, blistered feet, or the wrong gear. Your feet will get wet regardless of the rental package you choose. While many believe waterproof shoes are ideal, they often feel like bricks when wet. Our shoes are designed to allow water to enter and exit freely, preventing this problem. The neoprene socks we provide will not only help maintain your body temperature but also prevent blisters, unlike hiking in cotton or wool socks.
Our Narrows Packages Include:
Canyoneering Boots – Built for slick riverbeds, designed for grip and ankle support
Neoprene Socks – Keep the warmth in and the blisters out
Wooden Hiking Stick – Trust us: it’s sturdier than your trekking poles in the Narrows
Dry Bibs & Pants (Seasonal) – Insulated, waterproof, and tailored to keep your core warm and your legs dry
